Did you know just one soda contains more than an entire day's worth of the recommended added sugar intake. Not to mention a ton more of not-at-all-good-for-you crap like high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, and artificial colors.
Oh, but not to worry, you drink sugar-free DIET Coke, don't you? PERFECT! You're ingesting some cancer-causing aspartame, delicious "caramel color", and some yummy postassium benzonate -- you know, that stuff they have to load in the cans to save your precious diet coke from molding over while it's waiting for you to drink it.
Okay, now that you're done with soda. sweet tea, and that "natural flavored water" you're drinking, sweetened up with sucralose (<--recently linked to an increase in diabetes) let's talk about what a day in the life of your liquid intake should look like...
What I drink in a day:
7:30am - Coffee
If you've never tried black coffee you should at least try it. Try it both hot and cold. I totally surprised myself after drinking coffee for years with creamer that I'm actually a big fan of plain ol' black coffee. And you know what, ZERO calories + tons of antioxidants to boot! If you must have some flavor in your coffee, start your day off right. Opt for a low sugar, low fat option that has REAL ingredients. I'll never understand people who are committed to healthy eating but then load their coffee with cream made from oil and fake, no-calorie sugars that are known carcinogens every day!- Recommended Coffee Creamer: Silk Vanilla Almond Creamer
- If you insist on filling your body with the cow's milk you don't need: Coffee-Mate's Natural Bliss Vanilla Creamer
8:30am - Water
We invested in these 30oz Yeti Rambler Tumblers. Old me would have had the reaction you just had after clicking that link. "You're telling me to pay $40 for a cup? Are you crazy?"Here's the thing, water is boring. And when you realize how much better you'll feel once you start drinking a ton of it, all day every day. And then realize how crappy you feel on days when you're water intake is lagging, you'll realize it's worth the price to keep that water, ice cold with a fun straw in a cup you don't have refill a 8 times a day.
10:30am - Fill 'er Up!
My water should be empty now. Time to fill it up!Noon - More Water
Lunch time! Do you want a drink with that order? "Nope! I'll be filling up my water cup, thanks!"
1:30pm - Wheatgrass Shot & Green Tea
When the afternoon lull sets in, I need a little pick-me-up to keep me focused and energy up all afternoon.
I discovered the power of Wheatgrass shots when they were recommended as part of a detox I did this spring. Yes, these are almost as gross as they sound. This is the only time I drink juice, just to take this shot.
- Mix 1/3 cup Lakewood Organics Juice. (I'm a big fan of both Golden Roots and plain ol' Apple Juice) with one scoop Amazing Grass Organic Wheat Grass powder. Shake or stir with a whisk. Drink fast and right away. You don't want the powder to sink to the bottom of the cup. Yuck.
I then sip on a hot green tea sweetened with just a touch of organic, raw, unfiltered honey (seriously, like half a teaspoon --- IIFYM people!)
3:30 - Back to the watering hole!
5:30pm - Fill 'er UP!
I fill up my cup again, even if it's not empty, so I have a fresh, ice cold cup full for the drive home.
Usually, that same cup will last me through dinner.
9:00pm - Tea Time
Ending the day with a boost to my immune system lets my body restore itself over the night. I'm a big fan of Echinacea tea from Traditional Medicinals.
- If I'm feeling particularly run down, I'll add a packet of Lemon-Lime Emergen-C
- For the first few days after getting back from traveling or if I just haven't been eating the way I know I should I'll drop in a second bag of Smooth Move to get my gut back on track (after you start eating clean, it doesn't take long for your gut to start screaming at the top of it's lungs when you stray).
